Beyond Binary: When choosing sides isn’t an option

I need you to pick a side – quick! –  are you a flat earther or are you a terrorist?

Too often today we are asked to “choose a flag” or “pick a side” as if we lived in a simplistic binary world and we were obligated to instantly identify and align with one side or the other.

Are you pro-vaccine or anti-vaccine?  Are you pro-Ukraine or a Putin lover?  Are you with Isreal or Hamas?

Bret Weinstein and I delve into the intricacies of recent global events that have left so many unnerved and sometimes intellectually or morally homeless.  It turns out the binary choice is a false dichotomy.  There are nuances and subtleties that matter, and more often than not there’s a third option that makes more sense.

That was journalist Rikki Schlott speaking before a sold-out crowd on Monday night at a live taping of The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie podcast in New York City. Schlott, 23, teamed up with Greg Lukianoff to co-write The Canceling of the American Mind.

Lukianoff, 49, is the president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) and co-author with Jonathan Haidt of the bestselling The Coddling of the American Mind (2018). Schlott is a fellow at FIRE, a New York Post columnist, and a co-host of the Lost Debate podcast.

Cancel culture, they argue, constitutes a serious threat to free speech and open inquiry in academia and the workplace, and is best understood as a battle for power, status, and dominance.

Russell Brand’s Demonetization Is Not a Bug of the Emerging Financial Order, but a Feature

Mr. Brand’s case shows that mere accusations are all it takes to leave someone suddenly demonetized.

“This is the informal social credit system that I talked about in ‘You Will Own Nothing’, coming after your sources of income at their discretion,” Ms. Roth wrote on X following Mr. Brand’s demonetization. “You are not ‘innocent until proven guilty’ in the big tech sphere or the court of public opinion.”

Months ago, one of you posted about this. I finally finished it today. I wasn't sure what to expect. I learned more about about positions on both sides of multiple issues. I'm not sure that "enjoy" seems like an appropriate word for such material, but I did look forward to continuing the journey as I progressed through the episodes.

#^Florida lawmaker’s bill would get rid of the Democratic Party

Florida Democrats took on tremendous losses last election cycle, and now a Republican state lawmaker wants to eliminate the party entirely with a bill filed Tuesday.

“The Ultimate Cancel Act” (SB 1248), sponsored by state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia (R-Spring Hill), would cancel the filings of any political party that supported slavery during the Civil War.

“The Democrat party adopted pro-slavery stances in their party platforms and this bill says that if you have done that in the past, then the Secretary of State shall de-certify and get rid of the party,” Ingoglia said.
