If there was any intention to do journalism, the title of this news piece should have read: "based on studies done by social scientists, three people with little knowledge of fruticulture compare apples to oranges while pretending to compare bananas and conclude that rainfall doesn't affect the growth of cashew". Unfortunately this is not about tasty vegetables, but a global life-or-death issue.

One can only wonder why such a non-reviewed, non-edited, self-published text from people who have no credentials in the field and are ostensibly politically motivated on the issue gets any attention.

Metanalysis, even if properly conducted, ain't even an appropriate tool to apply to this question, since both the systems and the treatment are too heterogeneous for a metanalytic procedure to reach meaningful conclusions.

On the issue, there are well documented clear evidence cases of different levels of lockdown that in some contexts significantly improved or even contained the epidemic without major societal harm (France, New Zealand), as well as refusals to lockdown at any level that had catastrophic consequences (collapse of the health system in a few Brazilian cities), but also varied approaches to lockdowns that didn't reach the desired effect but possibly (in some cases very likely) averted major catastrophes, like the ill-coordinated efforts of states in the USA and Brazil; and finally other contexts where lockdowns were not required at all to contain the epidemic (Korea, Japan). Each of these cases is unique in its combination of people, territory, culture, habits, politics, climate, remote work potential, and thus dynamics of the epidemic, and decisions had to be taken navigating all of that.

There is though one point to be made about covid-19 and lockdowns: the fact that this disease has a relatively long and contaminant incubation period, plus a large number of contaminant asymptomatic cases and mild cases ressembling common flu, added to the fact that little was known in the early days about its severity and contagion (and even longer to understand it was airborne), made lockdowns a uniquely effective tool in a number of contexts, which would not be the case for other epidemics.

Austria is embarking on a dramatic public health experiment from Tuesday, with a controversial new law that makes Covid-19 vaccines mandatory for everyone.

Multiple European countries have stigmatized people who refuse a vaccine, but Chancellor Karl Nehammerâ€™s government is going further and will start criminalizing holdouts.

Police will begin checking the vaccination status of people on the street and during traffic stops. Beginning in mid-March, offenders who havenâ€™t had a shot will face fines rising to as much as 3,600 euros ($4,050). The law, which received a record number of public comments before being passed, runs through 2024 and has catalyzed a broad sweep of protesters.

Our eldest came home from the dorm last night for my wife's birthday and spent the night. This morning, he finds out that his roommate tested positive for covid. That's some pretty shit timing! At least it is warmer today, making it less unpleasant to have all the windows open.

#^Horowitz: Whistleblowers share DOD medical data that blows vaccine safety debate wide open

Data, transparency, and surveillance. That is what has been missing from the greatest experiment on humans of all time throughout this pandemic. Now, military medical whistleblowers have come forward with what they claim is perhaps the most accurate and revealing data set on vaccine safety one could possibly find.

According to the military, DMED is the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branchâ€™s (AFHSB) â€œweb-based tool to remotely query de-identified active component personnel and medical event data contained within the Defense Medical Surveillance System (DMSS).â€ In other words, it contains every ICD medical billing code for any medical diagnosis in the military submitted for medical insurance billing during any given period of time. Three military doctors have presented queried data to Renz that shows a shocking and sudden spike in nearly every ICD code for common vaccine injuries in 2021.

DMED is quite literally an epidemiological surveillance program designed for the express purpose of detecting surges in illness and injury to make sure the military is combat-ready. Itâ€™s about national security even more than public health. Why would the military not have blown the whistle and warned the CDC right away about this data? On the military health system website, the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division (AFHSD) is described as â€œthe central epidemiologic resource for the U.S. Armed Forces, conducting medical surveillance to protect those who serve our nation in uniform and allies who are critical to our national security interests.â€

But Peter Graves, spokesperson for the Defense Health Agencyâ€™s Armed Forces Surveillance Division, told PolitiFact by email that "in response to concerns mentioned in news reports" the division reviewed data in the DMED "and found that the data was incorrect for the years 2016-2020."

Officials compared numbers in the DMED with source data in the DMSS and found that the total number of medical diagnoses from those years "represented only a small fraction of actual medical diagnoses." The 2021 numbers, however, were up-to-date, giving the "appearance of significant increased occurrence of all medical diagnoses in 2021 because of the underreported data for 2016-2020," Graves said.

The DMED system has been taken offline to "identify and correct the root-cause of the data corruption," Graves said.

#^Quebec Subjects Unvaccinated to â€˜Humiliating' Treatment If They Want to Get Food, Medicine From Large Stores

Beginning this week, Quebec began requiring vaccine passports to enter large stores, 16,000 square feet or bigger, meaning the unvaccinated cannot shop at places like Walmart or Costco.

There is an exemption, however, for accessing pharmacies and food inside those stores, but thereâ€™s a catch. The unvaccinated wishing to do so must be accompanied by a store employee to ensure they do not make any other purchases.

So, if you are unvaxxed, you can go in the store, but you will be followed around by someone to make sure you only purchase approved items.

On the plus side, your escort will probably be wearing a bright safety vest to scare people away, helping prevent you from catching covid from vaxxed customers.

I have a confession to make: I recently fled Quebec for a week, a refugee from Legaultâ€™s 2.0 curfew-and-confinement rules.

A friend told me about an available condo in Florida, my wife and I made a last-second decision to briefly escape and work remotely. But the second we landed, it felt like weâ€™d arrived on another planet.

As someone who lives in Florida, I found this interesting. I think I would find visiting Quebec a culture shock, too. Especially things like

we still canâ€™t legally invite anyone to our home

All in all, the author seems more comfortable with Quebec status quo but, at the time, somewhat conflicted.

Whatever mortality displacemtn there has been in the US so far has been overpowered by increased mortality. Excess mortality in the US was worse in 2021 than in 2020. Maybe we will finally see the effects of mortality displacement in 2022 that I thought we would see in 2021.

A less flippant response to "wasn't it supposed to be about mandates" is that you have a range of people against the mandates. On one end are people who think these vaccines are safe and effective, but oppose mandates on principle (or think there should be exceptions for those who have already had these disease, etc). Then there is a wide spectrum of people who range from opposing these specific vaccines to all vaccines. Reasons for opposing either this or many vaccines range from "because the data show it to be unsafe" to "Bill Gates is an alien."

When you you give people a forum to talk about why they oppose the mandate, all these various reasons, both rational and not are going to come out. Of course, the media will pick out the most extreme, because they is what they do. Depending on their bias, they will either present them as outliers or as representative of the whole movement.

While many voters have become skeptical toward the federal governmentâ€™s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a majority of Democrats embrace restrictive policies, including punitive measures against those who havenâ€™t gotten the COVID-19 vaccine.

Some highlights:

Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Democratic voters would favor a government policy requiring that citizens remain confined to their homes at all times, except for emergencies, if they refuse to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Nearly half (48%) of Democratic voters think federal and state governments should be able to fine or imprison individuals who publicly question the efficacy of the existing COVID-19 vaccines on social media, television, radio, or in online or digital publications.

Forty-five percent (45%) of Democrats would favor governments requiring citizens to temporarily live in designated facilities or locations if they refuse to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

While about two-thirds (66%) of likely voters would be against governments using digital devices to track unvaccinated people to ensure that they are quarantined or socially distancing from others, 47% of Democrats favor a government tracking program for those who wonâ€™t get the COVID-19 vaccine.
