@
Waitman Gobble So as not to derail the other thread, I thought I'd post about my cruise here. We go on an
unusual cruise. Check my
JoCo2016 and
JoCo2018 categories as well as my
JoCo channel, which was an incomplete attempt to post pictures one year.
In the past, we were merely a large percentage (maybe 25%) of the ship, but now we have grown to the point that we can fill a whole, if smaller, ship. This will be my 5th time going. Imagine a week-long music festival, comedy festival, and sci-fi convention mixed all together where the convention hotel was instead a cruise ship. We basically replace all the ship-board entertainment with our own. We still go places and have excursions. Some years, we have land-based concerts (not this year). Most have been in the Caribbean, but some have been to Baja California.
The weirdest thing is that none of these individual components (music festival, comedy festival, sci-fi con, cruise) appeal all that much to me, but this combination works. It's not so huge (maybe 2k people) as to be overwhelming. It is a ship full of nerds. You can interact informally with the entertainers. I've delivered shipboard mail with Jim Boggia. I've stood in the bathroom line in Loreto, Mexico with Aimee Mann. My wife put a fake mustache on Zoe Keating's lip. It's not like waiting in a line for an hour for 15 seconds of face time and an autograph, then move along.
I'm happy to say more about it, if anyone has questions. Last year was scrubbed early because of covid (we had a virtual event instead) and this year was not certain until this week.
