Interesting. I like the R values on his insulation and choosing high efficiency, his roof design makes sense and I would do.

While there are advocates of airtight home construction, I'm not one of of them. I'd rather NOT have to run an air exchanger to get rid of my own CO2 from breathing, especially with his requirement of having it ALWAYS on. If I were living in a cave or a coffin, that seems appropriate.

Right now my experiment is going well, and I have thought about scaling it up. If I do scale it up, based off of Mike's experience I will make sure it is not grid tied (like my existing small setup). I have no plans of scaling in the next year or two.

By government decree, burning wood no longer produces more CO2 than burning coal. It apparently produces no CO2 whatsoever, at least according to the carbon counters in Brussels and London—surprisingly convenient for those in the burning business instructed to care about CO2 emissions. Not actual CO2 emissions, of course, just the ones the government has decided to count, which seems to us like a fine example of the difference between science and “the science.”

I've seen references lately about the price of solar coming down, so I went to EnergySage and got an updated quote. My recollection from the past was that you could expect it to take 7-9 years for a system to pay for itself, if you paid cash for it. This quote said it would take 16.5 years! If you got a loan to pay for it, you probably wouldn't break even during the expected life of the system.

I guess the recent lower prices is relative to the slightly less recent skyrocketing of prices.

Simon Michaux: The Green Energy Myth

There is no topic more important than today’s.  Everything hinges on “us” getting it right.  And by us I mean the entire global population.

That topic is #energy.  Specifically, the energy transition away from fossil fuels generally but oil most urgently.  Why?  Because oil is central to everything about our current way of life.  The capital markets only function while expanding, literally millions of distinct products find the headwaters of their genesis in building blocks derived from oil.  95% of everything moves from point A to point B moves because of oil.

Heck, you eat oil in the form of oil-extracted or produced fertilizers, tractor activity, pesticides, and herbicides, and the fact that the average calorie you eat first traveled 1,500 miles before landing on your plate, every mile of that enabled by oil.

If we get this transition wrong – either by failing to plan appropriately or, worse, fibbing to ourselves by selling a set of technologies that cannot do what we’ll need them to do – then massive pain awaits.  Economies will crash, as will populations.  Wars will be fought.

Today we’re talking with Simon Michaud, an associate professor of geo-metallurgy at the Geological Survey of Finland and a key figure in the Circular Economy Solutions Unit.  Dr. Michaux has done the math.  He’s taken the time to study mining and resources and then performs some simple arithmetic to determine that…uh oh…we haven’t got a chance in the world of making an easy energy transition.  None.  The reasons are many, but the core of the problem is we’ve put the wrong people in charge and allowed flawed narratives to take flight unchallenged.

1894: A one-thousand-mile canoe trip before the age of oil

In one of the boxes of inherited family archives filled with scrapbooks, photo albums, odd letters, and more than a few pictures of people whose names are lost or completely forgotten, there is one item I have always found of interest. This is a book titled “Log Book of a Thousand Mile Canoe Trip, June 27 – August 25, 1894.”

It is the story of a great uncle’s adventure with four friends at the age of 18. They traveled by steamer from New Haven to Troy, New York, on the Hudson River, then paddled 37 miles up the Champlain Canal to Lake George and then on to Lake Champlain, then down the Richelieu River to Sorel on the Saint Lawrence River. From there they went downriver on a barge to Quebec, then by rail to the St. Francis River, paddled up the St. Francis and then took a short rail hop to the headwaters of the Connecticut River. From there they paddled downstream to Springfield and then went home again by rail.
