I've seen references lately about the price of solar coming down, so I went to EnergySage and got an updated quote. My recollection from the past was that you could expect it to take 7-9 years for a system to pay for itself, if you paid cash for it. This quote said it would take 16.5 years! If you got a loan to pay for it, you probably wouldn't break even during the expected life of the system.
I guess the recent lower prices is relative to the slightly less recent skyrocketing of prices.
