Good News For A Change, Part 1: Independent Media Is Replacing the MSM

What’s really happening is a textbook case of capitalist creative destruction. Good journalists — and their readers/viewers — are leaving platforms that have been captured by an aristocracy that profits from war, debt, and ill health. And they’re migrating to platforms like Substack and Rumble where real journalism is still happening.

A whole constellation of independent journalists/interviewers like Joe Rogan, Matt Taibbi, Glenn Greenwald, Russell Brand, Maichael Schellenberger, and Breaking Points’ Krystal and Saagar are thriving. A typical long-form Joe Rogan interview will attract ten times the audience of CNN’s prime-time lineup. And Matt Taibbi recently noted that his Substack newsletter earns multiples of his previous salary as Rolling Stone’s political bureau chief.

This is the profile of a growth industry, not a dying one. Today’s media ecosystem is selecting for talent and integrity while punishing arrogance and dishonesty. That’s a recipe for upward evolution.

To me, the "capitalist" adjective is a given as, in most, if not all, non-capitalist systems, any such change isn't caused by creative destruction, but by bureaucratic dictate.

Capitalism Is Not Just about Stuff

As a diehard capitalist, I will be the first to tell you that wealth has very little to do with possessions. It’s about the people in your life, having a lifestyle you enjoy, a healthy body and a sense of purpose and meaning.

But economics is as relevant to those things as it is to material possessions. It isn’t just about getting more stuff. It’s about satisfying human values—all our values.

Economics is as much about getting more and better friendships as it is about getting more and better shoes. It gives us awesome music, movies, and hobbies as much as phones, computers, and cars.

The job of an entrepreneur in capitalism is simply to help people accomplish their goals, whatever they are. Sometimes that means providing shoes. But sometimes it means providing a space where people can meet new friends, like a sports league. Sometimes it means writing a book that can help people improve their lives. Sometimes it means offering counseling to help people with their mental health or rehab programs for recovering addicts.

Improving the economy is about building a better world. And that doesn’t necessarily mean a world with more stuff. It means a world with more of whatever we think it needs.

So let’s not acquiesce to those who would limit economics to material prosperity. Economics is about satisfying human needs and wants in all their forms, tangible and intangible. Of course, a healthy economy can’t solve all our problems. But I think it can help us solve a lot of problems that we don’t normally think of as economic problems, from environmental degradation and crime to mental health and substance abuse.

The kind of human flourishing environmentalists and progressives want is absolutely within our reach. But if we want to achieve it, we need to start seeing economics and the economy as more than a cheap talking point used by selfish businessmen.

Companies Shouldn't Have the Right To Veto Their Competition

Katie Chubb had an idea for a business. She noticed that hospitals in Augusta, Georgia, weren't meeting the demand for birthing services. So she founded Augusta Birthing Center, a nonprofit, freestanding birth center that could offer a better experience at a lower price. But when she applied for a license to operate, the existing hospitals protested to the state regulatory body that her services were not "needed" in the market. The state denied her the opportunity to start her business because of those protests.

Chubb ran squarely into Georgia's certificate of need (CON) law—also known as certificates of public convenience and necessity in some states.

Under a CON scheme, the regulatory body requires the applicant to show that their service is "needed." But that's not all. The agency also notifies existing businesses that someone has applied for a certificate. The existing businesses can "protest" the application. That is, they testify that they are already meeting demand, so there is no "need" for a new business. It's a competitor's veto.

He then later served as a member of President Reagan's Economic Policy Advisory Board. He's perhaps best known for developing the Laffer curve, a model for determining the optimal balance between tax revenues and economic growth.

For twenty-nine years, the Index of Economic Freedom has measured the impact of liberty and free markets around the globe, and the 2023 Index confirms the formidable positive relationship between economic freedom and progress.

If the trend continues, and I have no reason to think it won't, next year my country will drop from the "mostly free" to the "moderately free" category.
