We are currently living in an age of extreme -- and in certain cases, unprecedented -- levels of monetary and fiscal policy.

Is that wise? Or should market forces be allowed to play out more & free us from the constant intervention of the central planners?

To explore this, we welcome economist Dr Arthur Laffer. Dr Laffer was the first to hold the title of Chief Economist at the Office of Management and Budget in the early 1970s. He then later served as a member of President Reagan's Economic Policy Advisory Board. He's perhaps best known for developing the Laffer curve, a model for determining the optimal balance between tax revenues and economic growth.

What is corruption – and why does it matter so much?

As the flow of industry money into research has multiplied, innovation and new ideas have shrivelled and died. This, anyway, is my working hypothesis. You may feel there are other reasons. In which case, I would be interested to hear them.

So, yes, I think that corruption is incredibly important. Particularly within the world of science, where mavericks and innovators are absolutely essential. Graphene, for example, an actual major scientific breakthrough. This was discovered by two scientists, Andrei Geim and Kostya Novoselov playing about with pencils and sticky tape in a laboratory in Manchester University.

Playing about in a lab! Research nowadays is driven by funding. Funding is driven by commercial applications. The ‘best’ researchers today know how to bring in money for their labs, and for their universities. Today, researchers need to be productive and drive the income stream. To quote Peter Higgs: ‘I wouldn’t be productive enough for today’s academic system.’

A lot of focus is put on the employment rate by today's economists. And by their measure, the jobs market is still robust, with unemployment, currently at 3.7%, down near all-time lows.

However, those calculations completely ignore the 100 million US adults categorized as "not in the labor force" who do not work and are not looking for work. That's pretty much 1 out of every 3 US adults.

A good number of those people are retired or are students. Some are caregivers and some are on disability. But a growing number of them, especially men between 25-54 years old, are voluntarily giving up finding work.

It's gotten to the point where 1 in 6 prime working age men has no paid work at all.

Economist Nicholas Eberstadt calls the rise of this "non-working class" and the associated despair that comes with it, "America's invisible crisis".

Nicholas is the Henry Wendt Chair in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute and author of the book Men Without Work.

We're fortunate to speak with him today about the implications of our deteriorating labor force & the most needed reforms to address it.

The graph limiting the age to 16-54 (below) doesn't have as dramatic of a fall off in recent times compared to the graphs above, so that could mean that a lot of the drop-off in the graphs above is due to an aging population. Looking at their definition of labor force participation rate, it looks like, unless otherwise specified, the denominator is the entire population, including 1 year olds and 101 year olds. That makes me feel a lot better about the situation.

Last year, the National Institutes of Health – Anthony Fauci’s employer – doled out $30 billion in government grants to roughly 56,000 recipients. That largess of taxpayer money buys a lot of favor and clout within the scientific, research, and healthcare industries.

However, in our breaking investigation, we found hundreds of millions of dollars in payments also flow the other way. These are royalty payments from third-party payers (think pharmaceutical companies) back to the NIH and individual NIH scientists.

We estimate that between fiscal years 2010 and 2020, more than $350 million in royalties were paid by third-parties to the agency and NIH scientists – who are credited as co-inventors.

Because those payments enrich the agency and its scientists, each and every royalty payment could be a potential conflict of interest and needs disclosure.
