#^California Family Fined $120K for Helping with Housing

As they were losing their housing in 2014, Marcelino Martinez went to his boss Michael Ballard to ask if he and his family could stay at Michael’s vineyard. Marcelino was a valued employee and family friend of Michael’s, so Michael was happy to allow Marcelino to stay at Savannah-Chanelle Vineyards. As a result, Marcelino purchased a trailer and settled it into a secluded part of Michael’s 60-acre vineyard.

For three years Marcelino, his wife, and their three children (the third of which was born while the family lived at the vineyard) were able to avoid living on the streets because of Michael’s generosity. However, in 2017, Santa Clara County officials deemed the Martinez family to be in violation of county law, which prohibits living in an RV, and fined Michael $250 a day.

As fines mounted, county staff declined to help Michael acquire the proper permits. County officials refused to negotiate with Michael over his non-compliance and pushed him to evict the Martinez family, which he refused to do.

Now, because of his act of kindness, Michael faces hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and legal fees.

That's a bad situation. Zoning rules are important. The one guy in a trailer probably isn't bothering anyone, but what if the owner decided to have 100 trailers. That would likely cause issues with sewage and trash among other things. It sounds like he could have gotten a permit before installing the trailer. There is that notion of its mine i can do as i want.. but i've seen places that don't bother much with zoning if any at all, it's not really ideal.

I don't think it was a zoning issue. They say it is illegal to live full-time in an RV (as opposed to living in tents on city sidewalks? Oh, wait, they wouldn't want to fine the owner of the sidewalks, would they?).

in no small irony, the pavel durov russian founder of the widely used text messaging system telegram, who fled russia to avoid interference in his business and the privacy of his users has been arrested. in france. because make no mistake, the EU has become the point of the spear on intrusive mandate that all media, social media, and communications must be subject to the state and to the supra-national groups that organize it. the EU has done nothing but push mandates for surveillance and censorship, for hate speech and “misinformation” which increasingly has come to mean “and facts we don’t like.”

he made the (extremely unwise) choice to allow his private jet to land in france for reasons unknown. i suspect there’s a story there as he’s not a fool and must have known what would happen.

the french cops swooped, he’s now jailed, and facing 20 years for the heinous crime of “allowing people to speak privately to one another in a manner the EU cannot readily surveil.”

governments have been pressuring him to allow their police and intelligence groups access for years.

the west has become what we used to vilify china and the soviets for.

On June 28, the Supreme Court handed down its most significant decision since Dobbs. Loper Bright Enterprises v Raimondo ended a 40 year-old, court-created doctrine "Chevron deference." Around the same time and on top of that, there were two other decisions both trimming the vast powers of the administrative state.

It's a tough situation for sure. If you make 800 a week you end up with 80 bucks a week after paying rent and utilities. That's for groceries and anything else. They could also complain about the price of housing instead of the price of pizza. Maybe Pizza Hut and McDonalds should shut down.

Big Dairy Uses Big Gov't to Stomp Small Farms

Oregon wants to regulate small farms like large commercial dairies. Why? Not because of real environmental concerns, but because large commercial dairies insist that small dairies somehow have a “competitive advantage” over big ones—that is, that they don’t have to install expensive infrastructure to manage waste.

But small dairies don’t need that infrastructure because the amount of waste generated can safely decompose in fields or be composted for other productive use. The state is wrapping small dairies in meaningless red tape just to please big dairies.

That is protectionist, irrational and, moreover, unconstitutional.

Sarah, and three other small farmers, are now teaming up with the Institute for Justice to file a lawsuit against the Oregon Department of Agriculture and save small dairy farms in the Beaver State.
