For several years (with a gap for the 'rona), my wife has been part of a
skeeball league. She has tried off-and-on to get me to join in either as a permanent member or a substitute on her 3-person team, but I always managed to beg off long enough for her to find someone else.
Well, this season, she finally got me. And, I've got to admit, I'm getting into it. After 3 of 8 weeks of play, the team is ranked 8 of 15 and I am ranked 26 of 80. Not bad for a noob.
I've been working on my consistency and have been improving. I started the season rolling for 100's, but decided I should focus more on form and consistency, so I've been aiming for 40's (aka "up the middle") since partway through week 2. When you go for 100 and miss, you almost always get a 10. Missing a 40 might get you a 30 or a 20. I should also mention that the cup sizes decrease as the point values go up. This safer strategy has been working for me, but is obviously limited in how high you can go. You get nine rolls per frame, so if you hit 40 nine times, you get 360, the same that you would get if you got three "hundo"s (and six 10s). But, with my inconsistency, I was mostly getting 180's and 270's when going for hundo's. My best week "up the middle" averaged 263, so I've got a lot more improving I can do with this strategy. If I can consistently break 300, I might think about swapping strategies, but that might take all season.
