Lots of hair, lots of boogers to clean up, and a nasty seam. Will need to use x-acto blade.

Overall happy, but I need to get the extraction print settings fine tuned. It shouldn't require this amount of work to clean-up. I'll work on this model later. I need to focus on my rocket for this weekend's launch.

Are the color gradients inherent in the filament used or was there color blending as part of the printing process?

The filament used was rainbow. You can actually tell the print density of the horizontal sections by how fast the colors change. This is the first time I have used a rainbow filament, my daughter gave the filament to me for Christmas.

To clarify, my printer only allows a single filament. Some can use multiples but blending is more like a dither pattern. Dither patterns are prone to fail so typically solid colors are used. For example, if I had a two color printer, I could print the castle white and the spires red.

You can also section off print jobs to print parts of one color, change color filament, and then print the other parts, rinse and repeat. You then assemble for the final part.

Ha, I hear you Marshall. Keep in mind I made this printer from instructions on thingiverse. It started out as a ton of seemly random parts from all over the world, uncut girders, and me using my old crappy printer to print baseline parts. It was definitely more work than I expected but I absolutely love the end result. I've made a significant amount of mods over the base design to improve quality and stability.

If you get serious on looking at 3d printers:
While my filament based printer is built from scratch, it is good to get a first printer where assembly is necessary as you learn all the parts that make the printer work. This can help with diagnostics and repair as well as making your own customizations. Prusa has an excellent line of printers.

There's also resin based printers that have super high definition but typically have a much smaller print area. I just don't want to have mess with UV liquid resins, cleaning, etc. (at least yet).

I know many modelers that use the filament based printers (like mine) for low definition parts and then use the resin on the parts for their project that demand high definition.
