Using browser favorites/shortcuts can prevent you from making typos that send you to sites made to snag people making typos.
Fortunately, in this case, it was a low-tech scam that displayed a full-screen browser window to make it look like warning errors had popped up on your screen urging you to call the Windows Support Security Hotline at some number where I'm sure the real scam would have begun.
