The dull white cardboard coupler at the bottom is just so that I can hold it when painting and polishing.

For a normal flight (as opposed to the last one), how much repair is typically needed? Do you even try to return it to this pristine state after every flight or do you let wear and tear accumulate until it is enough to make a significant difference?

Actually I never return or fix my rockets to their pristine state, I just fix them that they fly safe again. I like to keep the wounds visible to remember the moment. But yeah sometimes we do go the extra mile to make them great again....

Agree with Freddy. That said, they typically get little wear and tear per flight. I'll spot touch up if there is a nick or scratch. If they land on a rock or the road, they get scratched badly sometimes and I'll fix that.

First coat of gloss white, then wet sanded with 400 grit. There will be two or three more coats each with sanding. Final goat will be sanded with 2000 grit and polished from there.

Update:
Hopefully I just put the final coat of paint on the nosecone. I'll wait two days for it to cure. If all looks good, 2000 grit sanding followed by polishing. If it does not look good, one more coat.

I also put the last coat of primer filler on the main body of the rocket, it's looking clean. Sanding with 220 grit will tell, I'll then re-sand with 400 grit so it is ready for its first coat of paint.

All this sanding is getting me back in shape! Wax on wax off.

I'm finally back to working on it. Since last update, I have added few coats of filler primer and lots of sanding. Nose cone is getting very close to the first coat of paint.

Airframe still needs more sanding and a few more coats of primer filler.

Looks like recent delays are a result of the requirement of a possible new environmental impact statement (they routinely have to file these). My guess is that spacex has already completed this and is waiting for review. Until this is complete, the FAA will not issue a license to launch. Hopefully this is complete and test launch occurs by end of July.

This was posted 4 days ago, and it does not look like SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell's concerns are related to environmental impact statement, but the R&D effort itself. They are still trying to have a first launch in July.
