Inspired Medieval Castle 3D Print
View article
View summary
This Medieval Castle was printed by
Jason Cooks
hand built 3D printer. It took 150 hours or six and one-quarter days to print. The total filament material used was 2.2 kilograms. The castle was inspired by two European castles known as the
Schloss Lichtenstein
and the
Neuschwanstein Castle
. The Schloss Lichtenstein is located in the
Swabian Jura Alps
in Baden Wurttemberg. The Neuschwanstein is found on a rugged hill above the village of
Hohenschwangau
near Fussen in southwest Bavaria, Germany.
This print came out just absolutely gorgeous. Everyone who has walked into my home to see the castle up close has looked at the castle intently and studied its structural intricacies. Jason's 3D printer showed off its precision in the fine detail of the spires, watchtowers, lancet windows, corbels, machicolations, turrets, and arrow slits. It also did a fine job on the rugged terrain—the large boulders at the base strengthed by European silver fir trees emphasized the realism. I love imagining walking around at that 1/150th scale. The wow factor of this piece will never get old. I am forever grateful to Jason for printing this beautiful piece of art for me. Thank you Jason!

Hey Marshall,
Good question. I haven't decided yet. When browsing thingiverse.com, I came across several exciting paint designs. If I can get some good ideas of what looks best, I may go for it and paint it. I imagine the paint job will take months to complete. Painting the castle would be a lot of fun and rewarding when completed. Here's some example paint designs below.

A friend of mine had an excellent idea to use lighting. We ran a few quick tests to see how light penetrates through the castle. A basic Amazon 200 lumen LED flashlight shines right through a good amount of the castle, all the way from the bottom to the top. I have some flat LED tape lighting on order from Amazon.

A friend of mine suggested using LED strip lights. Not a bad idea.

Built a corner stand for the castle. It now stands 64" or 5.4 Ft off the ground.
