For decades I have posed the question "Why is my governmental representation effectively based on my zip code? Just because my I happen to live physically close to this group of people doesn't mean we share political opinions.

I was recently introduced to a similar concept, but on the other side of the equation. "Why do I elect a single representative to represent me on all issues?" Even if I were the sole voter, is there really an individual out there who could best represent me on all issues? Even taking politics out of the equation, no one knows enough about everything to make intelligent choices about so many things. Admittedly, many issues cannot be neatly divided into categories, but imagine they could be organized into some reasonable number of categories. Wouldn't it be nice to have someone knowledgeable and competent in each category to represent your interests?

That makes too much sense. It will never fly.

Here is another one that I have mulled around for years: Why is the government involved in what a "marriage" is? The state should only validate civil unions, which are legally binding so partners have legal recourse. Marriage should be handled by a church, group, or organization that represents what your beliefs are.

I agree. An entire socially divisive issue could be removed from the political sphere. Unfortunately, it is far easier to add things to the political sphere then to remove them. Which, to circle back to the original post, means that the scope of what our representatives make decisions about is ever expanding, making the percentage of time they accurately represent us ever smaller.
