I just started watching season 2 of
Foundation
and it occurs to me that one reason they made such drastic changes to the story compared to the books is that, if they followed the books, they would be on their 3rd set of set of characters by now.

Being so different, if you get into the show, I'm not sure you are really getting into Asimov. Not being familiar with the original work will probably help you enjoy the show more as you won't be distracted by the glaring differences.
